We probably won’t have Western-style toilets in our homes. Instead of sitting on a white throne, we’ll be squatting. I’ve been practicing a lot of squats with very good form while doing Crossfit so I’m very prepared for the squatting.
I’m more nervous about the “toilet” (will this be a hole in the ground?) and the lack of toilet paper. Cambodians and other Asian countries use water to clean themselves. They think it is cleaner than using toilet paper, and I guess it eliminates trash.
I have a very small stash of toilet paper (the tiny rolls you take camping) that I may use during the awkward transitioning phase. I heard that one volunteer currently in Cambodia couldn’t give up toilet paper; she uses it regularly and burns it later. (Trash is either buried or burned.)
It seems so silly. But honestly, anything I am nervous about is physical. I really am a slave to my body!
Water vs. Toilet Paper… Will I become a convert?
